The Department of Defense (DoD) is working on a “more enduring” version of the Commercial Virtual Remote (CVR) environment technology that it ramped up earlier this year to support telework for more than one million DoD personnel during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a senior Pentagon technology official.
John Sherman, Principal Deputy CIO at DoD, said Oct. 28 at a virtual C4ISRNET event that the agency extended use of the current version of its CVR technology through June 2021, while it pursues work on a more enduring solution for telework to succeed the current model.
The current CVR environment was designed by the DoD CIO Cloud Computing Program Office in response to the pandemic, and is accredited at cloud security Impact Level 2 (IL-2). The current CVR provides users with a temporary Microsoft Office 365 collaboration suite that includes cloud storage capability.
Sherman said the CVR solution now being worked on will target Impact Level 5, and will accommodate use of approved personal devices. IL-2 covers data cleared for public release, while IL-5 covers controlled unclassified information.
